Joystiq hands-on: Dokapon Kingdom

What do you get when you cross a board game with an RPG and toss in a heavy dosage of Japanese anime influence? A huge mess, LOLZ! Okay, seriously, if you mix things together right and stir liberally with the Wiimote, you'd get Dokapon Kingdom. It also doesn't hurt if you're a video game developer, like the folks at Atlus who put this together.

We spent a good deal of time in a hands-on with this game recently, and it's the perfect party game you've been looking for when you have real actual friends come over, not those online knockoffs. Check out the details after the jump.

TGS 08: Let's write an article about Let's Tap


If you've ever drummed your fingers on a table, whether in a physical display of impatience (where is that waiter?) or an attempt to capture an elusive beat, you'll probably be able to understand where Let's Tap is coming from. Specifically, it's coming from Sonic creator Yuji Naka's post-Sega studio, Prope, and hopes to win gamers (and their moms) over through sheer simplicity. Let's Face It: games don't get much simpler than tapping on a cardboard box.

Evaluated as a typical Wii game, Let's Tap does little to distance itself from the cavalcade of effervescent minigames swarming the system. But as an experiment in using the Wiimote differently -- that is, to not use it at all -- it certainly warrants further attention. As it requires the Wii controller to be placed on a flat surface, face down and buttons obscured, Let's Tap is a game we can see ourselves introducing to those wracked by a morbid fear of buttons and flailing.

Pogo opens Austin office, first title is Pictureka!


EA's Pogo division has opened a new studio in Austin, Texas, to work on the company's Hasbro licensed properties. In an interview with GameDaily, the company announced its first title will be based on visual acuity board game, Pictureka!, which the studio expects to be spotted in November for $20 on PC.

Pogo Austin's Studio Director Sean Clark says he "can imagine" the company's stable of Hasbro games (Monopoly, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit) coming to XBLA, PSN and WiiWare, but no announcement has been made. It's actually quite surprising that Pogo hasn't made such popular franchises available for download on consoles yet.

TGS 08: LocoRoco 2 grabs us with cuteness and depth


"Sorry it took so long," LocoRoco designer Tsutomu Kouno told me. In spite of the original's high-profile and well-received launch on the PSP, it's been over two years since we saw these lovable blubbers hit Sony's handheld. The silence around the long-rumored sequel is a bit baffling, as getting our hands on with the upcoming PSP title revealed a disarming amount of new content for the sequel.

It's undeniable that the original LocoRoco charmed hardcore gamers, thanks to its lovable style and rather unique design. However, it couldn't keep the attention of these gamers, as it was perhaps a bit too simplistic. While children and casual gamers were enchanted, hardcore gamers needed substance beyond tilting left and right.

So perhaps LocoRoco 2 is Kouno's attempt at bridging the gap between hardcore and casual audiences. The upcoming PSP-exclusive sequel maintains all the saccachrin sweetness of the original, but adds new gameplay features that add a tremendous amount of depth to the experience. The sheer amount of content found in this UMD/downloadable game is staggering.

LittleBigPlanet beta levels will be transferred to final game


People's opinions in polls be darned, Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans has apparently confirmed to 1UP that the user-created levels from the LittleBigPlanet beta will be transferred to the final game. Evans tells the site that they'll continue running the poll on the Official PlayStation Forums to gauge people's reactions to the news, but it appears this is now a done deal.

The LBP beta ends this Sunday, the game will be out beginning the week of October 21st.

King of Fighters '98, Arkanoid, Space Invaders Extreme, Metal Slug 7, and more heading to XBL Arcade

Hot from the Microsoft keynote at the Tokyo Game Show comes more retro arcade action. Been jonesing to play more Arkanoid ever since that thing came out back in 1986? It was Breakout on steroids, and ate quarters like Cookie Monster eats chocolate chip cookies. Super Arkanoid and Space Invaders Extreme will be out on XBLA this winter, and it'll be joined next year by Metal Slug 7 , R-Type and The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match.

The games will all be updated with new graphics, music, two-player and online modes, and will do a good job towards filling that vintage hole in your heart. Now Capcom, please give us some Darkstalkers, and we'll be happy.

You decide: Should LittleBigPlanet hit the reset button after beta?


With about four days to go before the LittleBigPlanet beta comes to an end, Sony has put out an interesting question to the public: Should it keep the "levels and items" created during the beta and carry those over to the game's launch, or start the whole thing from scratch? It is a question worthy of some discussion.

Anyone can vote in the LBP section of the Official PlayStation Forums before next Monday and Sony will go with whichever choice wins out. Sony is talking specifically about uploaded levels, any "save game data, offline creations or progress cannot be transferred into the full game." So, what's your course of action?

Rod Humble promoted to The Sims label lead

When we last spoke to The Sims' studio head, Rod Humble, he was applauding the franchise's retail success. Now the exec has another, albeit more personal reason to celebrate, having climbed up another rung on the corporate ladder, laying claim to the role of The Sims' brand's executive VP. The move follows the recent hiring of Jeff Green, who left the world of game journalism last month to throw his body on the gears of EA's expansion factory as well.

Humble replaces former lead, Nancy Smith, who EA notes will handle "special" The Sims-related projects before eventually moving into a new as-yet-undefined role in the months ahead. We offer congratulations, and suggest he celebrate his new position by locking co-workers in the bathroom or pushing them in the corporate pool before deftly removing any means of escape.

Scene It? Box Office Smash lands in retail Oct. 28

Microsoft has announced that Scene It! Box Office Smash will be hitting retail on October 28, which will likely serve as a saving grace for the Joystiq staffers who had no idea what else to do for Halloween. The game will cost $40 by itself or $60 in a bundle with four Big Button pad controllers. Truth be told, we had a lot of fun with the first game, Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action! And any game that draws sketches of construction workers playing with dolls meets our approval.

Also of note, Box Office Smash! is being touted as "the first game to debut with the New Xbox Experience's player Avatars," which can be used as your in-game character. We don't think this is an indication that the New Xbox Experience is coming out this month, as there are likely placeholders available, but it certainly raises an eyeybrow.

GameStop LBP pre-order adds more God of War sackness


We had previously learned that a Kratos SackBoy would be available with a GameStop pre-order, but what we didn't know was all the extras that would also be included with the reservation. The GameStop website and a new commercial (found after the break) reveal the pre-order will also include Minotaur and Medusa costumes, along with stickers and level pack.

The details on getting the redemption code vary between online and in-store reservation, with online codes being sent out a week before the game ships and store codes available at time of reservation -- while supplies last (call ahead). No word yet if the Heavenly Sword Best Buy exclusive Nariko SackGirl will come with levels, extra characters and a dose of a "twing-twang."

Joystiq impressions: Personal Trainer: Cooking


Out already in Europe and Japan, Personal Trainer: Cooking launches in North America on November 24. Like other upcoming Personal Trainer titles (Math! Walking!), Cooking is more tutor than game. After sampling its recipes, we developed a taste for the concept. The cookbook of 245 dishes gives step-by-step instructions, meeting chefs with a range of skill levels.

Joystiq impressions: Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party

The Rabbids are back. We liked the original, thought they dozed on the sequel, and hope the combination of randomness and fun returns for TV Party. More than 50 mini-games are shipping with the new Wii game, most of which will be playable with four people. About 30 percent of the games will be able to use the Balance Board, although the fad device won't be required.

We played three mini-games at the Nintendo Media Summit and are hopeful that this will be the best version yet. We'll know for sure after the November 11 release.

Joystiq impressions: Animal Crossing: City Folk


Animal Crossing is a one-hit-wonder. You might like it and play it forever, hate it and avoid it completely, or think it was catchy and then just get tired of the tune. Animal Crossing: City Folk does little to change our perception. This is Animal Crossing, again; go fishing, pull weeds, repeat. Some love it, some hate it, and some just want something new.

From what we saw at the Nintendo Media Summit, the city is just another place to go. Instead of Tom Nook's shop in your own town, you can buy from an upscale store. Instead of waiting for the fortune teller to visit, you can see her in the city. A few minor additions include a city-based auction house and theater where you see shows.

The rest of the updates seem equally subtle. You can play with your Mii face. Up to four players can meet in one of their towns or the city. Gamer can talk over the WiiSpeak microphone (sold separately). You can type messages by plugging in any USB HID keyboard. Otherwise, it's Animal Crossing again.

Neopets Puzzle Adventure gets October release window


When we raved about the Othello-based, Neopets Puzzle Adventure, we couldn't scrub away the sadness of endorsing something built on a Tomagotchi-knock-off. We name-dropped how it's being developed by Infinite Interactive, creators of Puzzle Quest, but that wasn't enough. We shivered for weeks.

Capcom let us know that the PC and DS versions are due by the end of October, while a Wii edition is coming later. So you'll soon be able to share our love of the puzzler (and self-loathing). Check out our original impressions again for the full details.

Joystiq goes to E for All

E for All remains the ghostly and distant third cousin of the previous mammoth version of E3 that's open to the public, and it takes place inside the carcass of that fearsome beast, the Los Angeles Convention Center. While we misjudged the time and arrived two hours early, that gives us plenty of time to peruse the schedule and pick our poison.

So far the highlights include:
  • A treadmill race across Azeroth
  • Meet and greet with Billy Mitchell
  • Samples of Gamer Grub, snacks developed for gamers
  • Hands-on with Ubisoft's Far Cry 2, Tom Clancy's End War, Shaun White Snowboarding, and Activision's Guitar Hero World Tour
  • Putting our butt in a Boom Chair
  • And the... Los Angeles Unified School District? "Participating students will obtain a deeper understanding of video games and how they can be incorporated into their future careers from speakers – including Fatal1ty – who will describe their experience with video games and ways to break into the industry." Run kids, run.
